The Discovery of 8.9 Second Pulsations from the Variable X–ray Source 2e0050.1–7247 in the Small Magellanic Cloud

چکیده
During a systematic search for periodic signals in a sample of ROSAT PSPC light curves, we discovered ∼ 8.9 s X–ray pulsations in 2E0050.1–7247, a variable X–ray source in the Small Magellanic Cloud. The source was detected several times between 1979 and 1993 at luminosity levels ranging from ∼ 5 × 10 erg s up to 1.4 × 10 erg s with both the Einstein IPC and ROSAT PSPC. The X–ray energy spectrum is consistent with a power law spectrum which steepens as the source luminosity decreases. We revealed a pronounced Hα activity from at least two B stars in the X–ray error circles. These results strongly suggest that the X–ray pulsar 2E0050.1–7247 is in a Be–type massive binary. We report the serendipitous detection of two previously unreported pulsars from the direction of the Small Magellanic Cloud, with periods of 16.6 and 25.5 seconds. The detections are based on archival PCA data from the Rossi X-Ray Timing Explorer (RXTE). The observation leading to these detections occurred in September 2000 extending over 2.1 days with an exposure of 121ks. A possible identific...
متن کاملThe nature of RX J 0052 . 1 - 7319
The nature of the X-ray source RX J0052.1-7319 is discussed from observational data obtained from ROSAT observations performed in 1995 and 1996. An accurate position is derived from ROSAT HRI observations of the source performed in 1995. The 6 error circle contains two OGLE microlensing optical variables of which one has previously been identified with a 14.5 mag Be-type star in the Small Magel...
متن کاملDiscovery of an X - Ray Pulsar in the SMC : AX J 0058 − 7203
We report on the discovery and analysis of an X-ray pulsar, AX J0058−7203, in the Small Magellanic Cloud. This pulsar exhibits coherent pulsations at P = 280.3 s with a double-peak structure. The X-ray spectrum is well fitted with a simple power-law model of photon index Γ ∼ 0.7. No significant change of the pulsation period over the observation was found. A comparison with ROSAT observations i...
متن کاملDiscovery of a new Transient X-Ray Pulsar in the Small Magellanic Cloud
Systematic Rossi X-Ray Timing Explorer (RXTE) observations of the Small Magellanic Cloud (SMC) have revealed a previously unknown transient X-ray pulsar with a pulse period of 95s. The 95s pulsar, provisionally designated XTE SMC95, was detected in three Proportional Counter Array (PCA) observations during an outburst spanning 4 weeks in March/April 1999. The pulse profile is double peaked reac...
متن کاملThe discovery of 96 s pulsations from the variable X-ray source 1SAX J0544.1-710 in the Large Magellanic Cloud
We report the discovery of a ∼ 96 s period X-ray pulsar in the direction of the Large Magellanic Cloud (LMC). The BeppoSAX X-ray spectrum is well fitted by an absorbed power-law model with photon index ∼ 0.5. The unabsorbed luminosity in the 2-10 keV energy range is ∼ 9×1035 erg s−1. The BeppoSAX position (40′′ uncertainty radius) of 1SAX J0544.1710 was found to be consistent with that of the A...
